Ibrox Exclusive: Alex Bruce reacts as 24y/o claims he was eager to join Rangers

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has claimed that Rangers have to look at better players than Jason Cummings if they are to close the gap on Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that there is still a lot of work to be done at Ibrox, and that the best way of ending the Hoops’ domestic dominance is to bring in a higher quality of talent.

Cummings, who previously spent a spell in Glasgow on loan, revealed in an interview last week that he was keen to stay with the Gers, but was unable to secure a permanent move to Ibrox.

And Bruce believes that Steven Gerrard made the right choice, and must look at better players if he is to end his side’s long wait for a league title.

“I think there’d be better players for them to go after, to be honest, in terms of going to compete with Celtic,” he told Ibrox News.

“I think there’s a decent sized gap, as we’ve seen in the second part of the season between the two clubs still. Both from seeing them in games and playing against them, Celtic are still better than Rangers in my opinion.

“They need to improve the squad to bridge the gap, but if they’re going to do it, they’re going to need top quality players.

“Whether he’s one of those? I’m not so sure.”

Cummings scored six goals in 18 appearances during his time at Ibrox, as well as registering one assist.

The 24-year-old now plies his trade for Shrewsbury Town, where he has struck seven times in 31 games across all competitions this season.
