Foreign manager: Gerrard made personal plea to take ‘incredible’ 22y/o to Rangers in Jan

Rangers boss made a personal plea to sign Egyptian forward Mostafa Mohamed in January, according to his former manager Milutin Sredojevic.

The 22-year-old Zamalek striker was touted as a possible target at Ibrox at the beginning of the year before the Gers ended up making a move for Hibernian star Florian Kamberi instead.

But Sredojevic, who has since parted company with the Egyptian club, has claimed that Gerrard was eager to get a deal over the line for Mohamed.

As quoted by the Daily Record, he said: “Steven Gerrard called me personally to ask about Mostafa Mohamed. He wanted to know what he was like as a player and at training.

“But Zamalek made it very difficult for the transfer to go through because they don’t want to looked at as a selling club.

“So the transfer never happened, but Steven Gerrard was very keen indeed for the move to go through.

“Mostafa is a player with a bright future. He is an incredible talent who will of course go to Europe one day soon.”

Did the Gers miss a trick by not signing Mohamed?

By the sounds of it, the boss certainly thinks so.

For Gerrard to be contacting another manager directly about his star talent, it would seemingly suggest that he was very, very serious about getting a deal over the line.

In the end, of course, we landed Florian Kamberi instead.

But which of the two would have been the better option for the Gers?

Well, so far this season, Mohamed has averaged 0.44 goals per game, compared to Kamberi’s 0.23, as per Wyscout.

In pretty much every other aspect, however, the Hibs loanee edges the Egyptian.

Kamberi has more successful dribbles per game, more shots on target per match, a higher pass accuracy rate, has won more duels per 90 minutes, and has a higher total action success rate.

Perhaps then, you could argue, missing out on Mohamed proved to be a blessing in disguise.
