Report – SPFL set for ‘crisis talks’ over Rangers title dilemma
Any hopes of Rangers denying Celtic of a ninth consecutive Scottish Premiership title could be dashed in the coming days as the SPFL look to remove the prospect of declaring the season null and void, according to the Daily Record.
All football in Scotland has been suspended in an effort to arrest the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, with no clear indication as to when or if action will resume.
And it is understood that the SPFL are set for “crisis talks” next week over how to find a solution to the ongoing crisis.
The report states that in the event of the season remaining uncompleted, the preferable outcome for the governing body would be to hand the title to Celtic.
This comes in the wake of a UEFA warning that voiding the campaign could lead to Scottish sides being banned from European competition next term.
As such, the likelihood of the SPFL following the example recently set by Belgium and declaring the league leaders to be champions has increased dramatically.
What should we make of this?
This is not good news, plain and simple.
Obviously, the preferred solution for all involved is to play any remaining fixtures, but in the event that we cannot do that, then it does look increasingly likely that the Hoops will just be handed the title on a silver platter.
And that just doesn’t feel right.
They may be 13 points clear at the top, but we still have a game in hand and two Old Firms left to play.
In ordinary circumstances, this season would be far from over, and it must be acknowledged that even if Celtic do become champions this season, it will be a trophy that will forever have an asterisk next to it.
This would be a tainted title.
