Ibrox Exclusive: Alex Bruce reacts to major contract report on Rangers ‘big asset’

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has claimed that Rangers will be desperate to keep hold of Alfredo Morelos, despite speculation that the club have halted their plans to offer him a new contract.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that even in spite of the 23-year-old’s dreadful slump in form over the second half of this season, he still represents a “big asset” for the Gers.

Football Insider reported earlier in the week that Ibrox chiefs had performed a U-turn and were no longer looking to tie the South American down to a new deal in Glasgow.

But Bruce is unconvinced by the speculation.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “He’s a big asset to Rangers, and that will always be the case, but he has had a poor second half of the season really.

“He started the season very well and he’s drifted away. However, he’s still a big asset to Rangers and I believe he is someone they’ll be desperate to try and keep hold of.

“If they are going to sell him, they’ll want proper money to try and get a replacement.

“We don’t know what is going on behind the scenes at Rangers with finances, and that could be another reason why they’re stalling on a contract, but I don’t think there’s any doubt in my mind that they’ll be trying to keep him.”

Morelos has scored 29 goals in all competitions this season, but just one of those strikes has come since the winter break.

His last league goal for the Gers came in the Boxing Day victory over Kilmarnock.
