‘I pray to god’ – Alan Brazil delivers major Rangers title race verdict
Alan Brazil has insisted that the Scottish Premiership title race between Rangers and Celtic must be played out in its entirety.
The Gers are currently 13 points behind the Hoops at the top of the table, with no indication of how or when the current campaign will be completed due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
It has been reported in recent days that the SPFL could look to hand Celtic the title if the season cannot be completed to avoid Scottish sides from being banned from European competition next season.
But Brazil would much rather see the season run its natural course, no matter how long that may take.
Speaking on talkSPORT, as per the Daily Record, he said: “I want the season to be played. I don’t care how long it takes
“Even if it has to go to July, August or September. I want it played out, I really do. I don’t think it’s right.
“I think when you win the title fans should be able to celebrate in the final game so I want to see promotion and relegation I really do.
“I pray to god in three weeks time it will have tipped and hopefully slowly we will be on our way down and then we can start looking ahead to see what can be done.”
Does Brazil have a point here?
It’s nice to hear somebody with such strong ties to Parkhead take such a rational view of this unprecedented situation.
The fact of the matter is that if Celtic were to be handed the title this term, it would be a tainted achievement.
Sure, they are likely to win it even if the season does resume, but while there is still a mathematical chance that they won’t, we cannot afford to be giving away trophies all over the place.
Also, why is there such a determination to prioritise a season that has not yet begun over one that is all but finished?
Surely it makes more sense to wrap this one up, as Brazil advocates here, and then take the necessary measures further down the line to condense the next campaign down into an allotted time frame.
If that means skipping cup competitions and international breaks, then so be it.
