‘Fear the worst’ – Barry Ferguson reacts to major Rangers exit update
Former Rangers star Barry Ferguson has claimed that he “honestly can’t think of anyone” he would “trust more” to take over as club chairman than Douglas Park.
Dave King stepped down from the top job at Ibrox last week after five years at the helm, after announcing his intention to do so at November’s AGM.
But while Ferguson has admitted that he was initially trepidatious about the news, he has also suggested that he is hugely reassured by Park’s presence.
Writing in a column for the Daily Record, he said: “When Dave King suddenly stepped down as Rangers chairman last Friday night I must admit there was a moment when I began to fear the worst.
“It probably shouldn’t have come as a shock. But it did. With football locked down and the entire world fighting against the coronavirus, I was taken aback.
“But, as worrying as it was to see King walking away, my concerns were put to bed the minute I realised who had slipped into the chairman’s seat.
“I’ve known Douglas Park for most of my life. I honestly can’t think of anyone I’d trust more to look after the club’s best interests and get it through to the other side of this crisis. Actually, I always hoped that one day he might take over the reins but never thought it would happen as he’s a very private kind of guy.”
What can we take from this?
It’s reassuring to hear somebody of Ferguson’s status and knowhow speak of Park in such glowing terms.
Opinions will no doubt be divided by King’s tenure at Ibrox, but the general consensus from pundits such as Alan Hutton and Alex Bruce, is that he did a good job at Ibrox, and has left the club in a promising position pushing forward.
Now, with Park at the helm in an interim role, you would hope that he would be able to continue the steady upwards trajectory we have seen in recent years.
Ferguson certainly thinks he can, and he would know better than most.
