‘Meltdown’ – Chris Sutton savages Rangers for ‘reckless’ financial decision

Chris Sutton has claimed that it would be financially “reckless” of Rangers to not enforce a pay cut on their employees in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

A number of Scottish Premiership sides have already announced temporary reductions in wages in an effort to prevent long lasting financial issues further down the line, with Celtic the latest to consider the possibility.

And Sutton believes that the Gers must do the same.

Referring to the Hoops’ plan to potentially slash their wage bill in a column for the Daily Record, Sutton said: “Surely Rangers have to follow suit shortly.

“Unless Dave King left a giant pit of money as big as the gaping hole in football’s finances as he walked out of the door, given what is happening around the globe at the moment, the Light Blues hierarchy have to be making a similar move. If they aren’t, they must be the richest club in Europe and we just didn’t know it.

“It is not that long ago that Rangers had a financial meltdown and ended up down the leagues. That came about through blatant mismanagement and not doing things properly when situations arose.

“As tough as it may be to tell employees, Celtic, Hearts, Aberdeen, Hibs and others are doing the right thing to look at implementing cutbacks. I find it inconceivable, bordering on reckless, that Rangers won’t do the same thing.”

Does Sutton have a point here?

It seems a little odd for Sutton to be taking such an active interest in the Gers’ finances.

Even looking beyond that though, there’s no saying that the club won’t decide to implement pay cuts at some point in the near future.

In an ideal world, that wouldn’t be the case, but these are unprecedented times, and if it is the only way the ensure the financial security of the club then it may well end up being the only solution.

That being said, let’s not forget that the Sutton’s beloved Celtic have still not implemented any cuts, and are still just sounding out the idea?

Who’s to say that the Gers aren’t doing the same behind the scenes?

Not everything has to be played out in the public sphere at every turn, and more importantly, not every significant decision at Ibrox has to be made on Sutton’s timetable.
