‘Always had my suspicions’ – Charlie Nicholas baffled by ‘weird’ Rangers update

Charlie Nicholas has claimed that ongoing boardroom drama at Ibrox leaves Rangers in a “weird” position.

Dave King stepped down from his role as chairman of the club at the end of last week, with Douglas Park being put in charge on an interim basis.

Since then, there have been rumours – which have subsequently been quelled – of Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group attempting a buyout, as well as an open admission from Graeme Souness that he would love to return to the Gers in a boardroom role.

And Nicholas has claimed that he is baffled by the ongoing situation in Glasgow.

Speaking to the print edition of the Daily Express, as per the Scottish Sun, he said: “Rangers at boardroom level have now become interesting.

“First you have wealthy businessman Jim McColl interested in copying Liverpool’s Moneyball philosophy, then Graeme Souness claims he would love to join the Ibrox board. There is something going on out there.

“It is all a bit weird that in this time of uncertainty you still have the prospect of investors. Change looks to be in the air but can they get it right?

“I always had my suspicions about King. What was going on and why did he continually want to fight Mike Ashley?”

Are Nicholas’ comments justified?

It would be very easy to look at the situation at Ibrox at the moment and assume that this is some kind of unexpected bump in the road that could lead chaos behind the scenes.

The reality is probably a whole lot less dramatic than that.

King was always due to step down this month, after announcing his intention to do so at the Gers’ AGM last year.

It is true that new funds are needed from somewhere, but that has been the case for quite some time, and it is still likely that King will have a part to play in the club.

The only slight surprise here is that the decision to step aside has gone ahead despite the Coronavirus pandemic, but even then, there is nothing particularly out of the ordinary here.
