‘It wouldn’t surprise me’ – Exclusive: Bruce says Rangers exit could be on the cards for 28y/o

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has admitted that he wouldn’t be surprised if right-back James Tavernier left Rangers once the next transfer window opens.

Speaking to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender claimed that the 28-year-old has done a good job for the Gers, but that he has to move on if he is unhappy at the club.

The captain has been a regular for the Light Blues so far this term, making 45 appearances across all competitions.

In those appearances, the former Newcastle defender has scored three goals and supplied 15 assists to help the Gers challenge for the Scottish Premiership title and reach the last 16 of the Europa League.

However, if Steven Gerrard can bring a new right-back in, Bruce believes that the boss would consider the possibility of selling the Bradford-born full-back.

“It all depends on Steven Gerrard and whether he can replace him,” Bruce told Ibrox News when asked if Tavernier could leave the Gers.

“He’s the club captain, he’s done very well for Rangers over the last few years, I’m sure he’s the kind of player Gerrard will want to keep.

“However, if a player’s unhappy and he doesn’t want to be there, it wouldn’t surprise me if he left.

“If he does want to go, it’s all about who he could go to and what he’s got to do to get there.”

Tavernier has been directly involved in a staggering 55 goals in his last two seasons at Ibrox but he has never truly won over the Rangers support.

According to the Scottish Sun, Newcastle were keen on Tavernier in January so there are bound to be teams out there who are willing to sign him.
