‘It’s refreshing to see’ – Exclusive: Bruce pleased by emergence of Rangers teenager

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce is not surprised to see a young talent like Kai Kennedy emerge at Rangers this season.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the ex-Kilmarnock defender suggested that the Gers should be leading the way in Scotland in terms of producing homegrown stars.

The 18-year-old made his senior debut for the Light Blues in January when he came off the bench in the 2-0 win against Stranraer in the Scottish FA Cup.

Before football ground to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic, Kennedy was named on the bench for Rangers’ 1-0 win away at Ross County in the Scottish Premiership.

Although he didn’t manage to come off the bench and make his league debut for the Gers, it still shows that Gerrard is considering a more senior role for the teenager in the future.

And Bruce believes that giving him a first team role is the correct thing to do.

“That’s how it should be really – Rangers and Celtic should have the pick of all the best players in Scotland,” he told Ibrox News.

“They’ve got the facilities and the pull of doing that, any young lad in Scotland doing all, as soon as the Old Firm come knocking, they’ll have the pick of all the talent.

“To see a player like that coming through, it can give the whole the club a lift. It’s a real bonus. For a club like Rangers, it’s refreshing to see.

According to a report by the Daily Record in December, Kennedy has attracted attention from Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

Rangers may face an uphill battle to keep hold of the young attacker if either of those clubs come calling but the fact he has made a first-team debut and featuring in the matchday squad in the league could be an effort to make him stay.
