Report – SPFL takes major step amid Rangers title race confusion
The SPFL have approached UEFA for guidance on how to resolve the Scottish Premiership title race between Celtic and Rangers amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, according to the Daily Record.
All football in Scotland has been postponed in an attempt to arrest the spread of the virus, leading to widespread uncertainty over when or if the season will be played to its completion.
The alternatives include declaring the entire campaign null and void, or handing league leaders Celtic the title based on current standings.
It is understood that the governing body’s newfound desire for advice comes in the wake of UEFA postponing both the Champions League and Europa League indefinitely.
The report also states that UEFA are holding talks over the possibility of condensing qualifying rounds for next season’s competitions, with the option of playing one-off clashes rather than two-legged ties being floated.
What does this mean?
At the moment, not a great deal.
Until we have something more concrete, we have to just assume that it is still the preference of all parties involved to finish the season by whatever means necessary.
Only yesterday, Gary McAllister insisted that the Gers would fight tooth and nail to ensure that the campaign was played to completion.
This latest report is a concern, however, because it would seem to suggest that the SPFL are softening on the idea of handing the Hoops the title.
Of course, there are more important things than football right now, but you can’t help feeling that doing so would be the wrong plan of action for the integrity of the Scottish game.
