‘I don’t see any other way’ – Rangers assistant McAllister issues verdict Coronavirus pandemic
Rangers assistant Gary McAllister has insisted that the Scottish Premiership season must be completed.
All football in Scotland has been postponed in an effort to arrest the spread of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
The unprecedented situation has understandably led to widespread confusion over when or if the current campaign will be concluded, but McAllister is in no doubt that it must be.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “I don’t see any other way. We have got to finish the leagues somehow.
“But I realise there are a lot of: ‘What ifs’. Does the season get shortened when we eventually get back?
“With the Euros now next summer, you could have guys playing football for two years non-stop to catch up. What happens about contracts that are running out in the next few months?
“But you would take all the problems just to get the current season finished.”
Is McAllister right about this one?
Yes, absolutely.
The fact of the matter is that fairest way to resolve this situation is to finish the season.
Logistically, it’s going to be difficult, of course, but there’s no other way that a proper conclusion can be reached while still upholding the integrity of the Scottish game.
If both ends of the table were foregone conclusions, then fair enough, call it off.
But right now, with the gap at 13 points, Rangers still have two Old Firms to play and a game in hand. That could leave the gap at just four points.
And things are even tighter at the bottom end of the table.
We need to finish this season because, like McAllister says, it’s the only feasible way of doing things.
