Charlie Nicholas issues Rangers title claim amid Coronavirus pandemic

Charlie Nicholas has claimed that Rangers should not concede the Scottish Premiership title to Celtic this season.

The Gers are currently 13 points behind their Old Firm rivals at the top of the table, with all football in Scotland suspended in an effort to arrest the spread of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

The unprecedented situation has led to former Celtic striker John Hartson suggesting that the Gers should concede the title race to his old club.

But Nicholas is not convinced by the argument.

Speaking to the Daily Record, he said: “John Hartson said Rangers would get a lot of credit if they were to concede the title to Celtic. From who?

“There is no chance of Rangers getting praise from anywhere.

“Their own fans would be up in arms. Rangers can’t concede the title, and why should they?

“As I have said all along, Celtic need to win it and hopefully we will get back playing and get everything decided on the pitch.”

Does Nicholas have a point here?

Yes, of course he does.

It’s not often you’ll hear a former Celtic hero sticking up for us in public, but it just goes to show how ridiculous Hartson’s claims are.

The gap is 13 points – we all know that number off by heart now – but the reality is a lot more nuanced than that.

We still have two Old Firms to play and a game in hand – win all of those and the gap is just four points.

If Celtic were then to lose one and draw one of their remaining six matches, the advantage would be with us.

Is it a long shot? Of course it is, yes.

But is it an impossibility? No, and until it becomes one, the season has to be played to its completion.
