‘Absolute nonsense’ – Hugh Burns savages John Hartson for ‘crazy’ Rangers claim

Former Rangers star Hugh Burns has branded John Hartson’s suggestion that the Gers should concede the Scottish Premiership title to Celtic this season as “absolute nonsense”.

The ex-Parkhead striker argued over the weekend that Steven Gerrard’s men would receive a lot of credit for admitting that they cannot catch the Hoops at the top of the table, thus negating the need for them to play their remaining fixtures this term.

Rangers are currently 13 points behind their bitter rivals.

But Burns is less than impressed with the suggestion.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “There is no chance Rangers can concede the title. If that was the case then Celtic’s ninth straight title would mean nothing.

“Big John is talking absolute nonsense. He doesn’t have a clue and I don’t think he is living in the real world. It’s a case of playing to the crowd and trying to appease the Celtic fans.

“Of course the odds are stacked against Rangers and it looks like Celtic will win the title if the season is played to a finish.

“But for Rangers just to roll over and accept their fate right now is crazy.”

Is Burns right about this one?

Absolutely, he is.

There is no way in the world that Rangers could be seen to be handing a ninth consecutive league title over to their bitter rivals while there is still a mathematical chance that they could catch them.

Yes, 13 points is a huge chasm, and the chances of us performing some kind if miraculous turnaround with nine games to go are slim at best.

But we do have a game in hand to play, and there are two Old Firms still left to play.

Win all of those matches and suddenly the gap is only four points.

Of course, there are more important things going on in the world today than who lifts the Scottish Premiership title, but for the sake of the integrity of the game north of the border, we cannot simply give the Hoops the crown.
