‘It’s a miracle’ – Ian Wright aims jibe at senior Rangers man
Ian Wright has made a subtle dig at Rangers manager Steven Gerrard by suggesting that Leicester City defender Wes Morgan was a better Premier League captain.
The former Liverpool midfielder is widely regarded as one of the best players of the modern era in England, but never managed to get his hands on a much-coveted league title during his illustrious career at Anfield.
By contrast, Morgan led his rank outsider Foxes side to an unlikely triumph in 2016, despite them finishing just above the drop zone a year prior.
And Wright believes that makes Morgan a better skipper than the Ibrox boss.
Speaking on the Match of the Day Top 10 podcast, the pundit said: “Wes Morgan won a Premier League title with a Leicester side no one expected.
“The fact is Steven Gerrard nearly did it. He nearly led Liverpool to it
“But Wes Morgan with the team he had and the way Leicester did it. It’s a miracle.
“It’s the miracle of the Premier League, with journeymen and people we didn’t know.”
Is this a fair assessment from Wright?
There are really two ways of looking at it.
If we’re looking at silverware alone, not to mention achieving something that bordered on a miracle, then Morgan probably does edge it, yes.
We will probably never see anything like that Leicester side winning the league in 2016 ever again, and the memory of that incredible season will live with a generation of football fans for a lifetime.
That being said, in terms of longevity and quality of output, there can surely only be one winner.
Gerrard is a monolith of the Premier League era, with 504 appearances, 121 goals and 70 assists to his name.
He may never have won the title, but he couldn’t have come much closer, and in every other sense, he was a vastly superior skipper to Morgan.
