Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce claims Gerrard is keeping Rangers big name ‘on his toes’ over summer exit
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has suggested that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard may be trying to keep loanee Ianis Hagi “on his toes” by not making a decision on his long term future at the club.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender also suggested that the boss will be assessing all of the options available to him in the transfer market before making a definite decision.
The 21-year-old arrived on a temporary deal from Genk in January, but the Gers have reportedly yet to decide whether they will exercise the option-to-buy clause written into his deal, as per Football Insider.
But Bruce has claimed that Gerrard will have his reasons for his indecisiveness.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “They just might not want to put all their eggs in one basket and say ‘yeah, we’re going to sign you, that’s it done and dusted’.
“You never know, he might take his foot off the pedal. They might want to keep him on his toes, they might want him to keep performing to the levels he has.
“I do think he’s had a good impact on the team, the games that I’ve seen him in and what Steven’s said about him. Obviously, a handful of games is a little bit different to a full season, and I’m sure Steven is weighing up the options of what he can bring and what else will be out there in the summer in terms of spending.
“So as I say, he might not want to jump into something straight away.”
Hagi has impressed since arriving at Ibrox, registering three goals and two assists in 10 outings for the Gers.
He has also established himself as a key feature of Steven Gerrard’s first XI, starting all but one of his side’s Scottish Premiership clashes since joining the club.
