Ibrox View: £10m Rangers transfer claim is downright insulting
RANGERS OPINION
Rangers are facing a whole host of questions at this present moment in time.
As well as the obvious challenges being posed by the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, answers are also needed on what has gone so dreadfully wrong on the field in the aftermath of the winter break.
Now 13 points behind Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, it’s probably fair to assume that our chances of lifting any silverware this season have all but evaporated.
And no player has embodied that slump as dramatically as Alfredo Morelos.
The Colombian was unplayable before the turn of the year, hitting 28 goals in all competitions and attracting attention from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan in January, as per Football Insider.
Since then, however, he has managed just one strike and has generally looked a shadow of his former self.
But despite his notable dip in quality, the latest claim from Daily Record journalist Scott McDermott is downright ridiculous.
Writing in a piece examining the four biggest questions Steven Gerrard must answer this summer, he said: “You have to imagine that any bid of £10million or more will tempt the Rangers manager to let him [Morelos] go and rebuild his striking department.”
Now, we cannot rule out Morelos leaving at the end of the season, whenever that may be.
As mentioned before, there was heavy interest in January, and his current form could well be the catalyst needed to convince the club to sell.
But £10 million would be an insult.
This is the same outlet that printed a column from Chris Sutton claiming the Odsonne Edouard is worth £40 million.
Morelos has still scored more goals than the Frenchman this season, despite his tailspin this year, and has had more shots on target per game, won a higher percentage of his offensive duels, and has a higher xG rating, as per Wyscout.
To think he is worth a quarter of what Edouard would be is bordering on lunacy.
