Ibrox View: Rangers star needs to change one key thing to rekindle fading spark

RANGERS OPINION

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos might be having his most mixed season ever in Glasgow.

After racing to a jaw dropping total of 28 goals prior to the midseason break, a massive drop in form has seen him register just one strike since January, with none in the Scottish Premiership.

Still, if there has been one competition where he has really shone this term, it is surely the Europa League.

The 23-year-old has hit 14 goals and six assists in 16 games in Europe so far this season, and is currently ranked ninth in Whoscored‘s overall Europa League ratings with an average match score of 7.53.

That means that he is also in their team of the season so far, and it’s not hard to see why.

But why has Morelos been so effective in Europe this term?

Interestingly, his stats suggest that his overall performances on the continent have been less impressive than you might initially expect.

Passing accuracy, successful dribbles, touches in the opposition box – all of these figures are lower per game in Europe than they are in Scotland this season, as per Wyscout.

One key figure is noticeably higher though.

Morelos averages 11.4% more shots on target per game in Europe than he does in Scotland, and the effects are noticeable, with 0.97 goals per game compared to his usual 0.63.

Perhaps then, this is the secret to El Bufalo breaking his domestic duck when action finally resumes – a little bit more selfishness, a little more willingness to just hit one, and hopefully a return to that killer instinct we all know he possesses.
