Report – Rangers in line for major financial boost amid drastic new Ibrox plans
Rangers could receive a financial boost if new measures are taken to shut down Scottish football grounds including Ibrox, according to The Times.
The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has led to all football in Scotland being postponed, but clubs can only trigger insurance claims for an interruption in business if stadiums are officially closed by governmental decree.
As such, it is understood that the SPFL will ask those in power to close all grounds to be closed until July 1st, thus providing clubs with a timely financial boost as their revenues are hit heavily by a lack of gate receipts.
The plan is not without problems, however.
The report also states that there is growing consensus in the Scottish game that the season will have to be finished at some point, rather than abandoned entirely or declared null and void.
But that could cause issues with scheduling, with general practice dictating that the season must draw to a conclusion before the SFA’s annual general meeting at the end of June.
As such, closing grounds would effectively mean that the season was over unless the Scottish FA agreed to an extension.
Is this the right thing to do?
At this stage, shutting grounds officially seems like the only logical thing to do.
It’s blatantly clear that we’re not going to have any football for a long time to come, and the longer that we stumble on without governmental intervention, the more financial risk clubs will face.
Truth be told, Rangers could probably ride out this storm given the size of the club, but others in Scotland might not be so lucky.
With that in mind, something must be done.
If that means asking the Scottish FA to extend the season beyond its usual end date then so be it.
These unprecedented times require unprecedented actions.
