Barry Ferguson issues title race warning, expects Rangers fans to ‘have a pop’ at him
Former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has claimed that the Scottish Premiership season must not be declared null and void by authorities.
All Scottish football has been postponed amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, causing uncertainty as to when the season will be concluded.
But Ferguson believes that it is imperative that it is finished, regardless of when that may be.
Writing in a column for the Daily Record, he said: “I still believe strongly that the season cannot be declared null and void but I also feel that titles have to be won fair and square on the pitch. I realise Celtic fans will be up in arms at the suggestion and they’ll say I’m just looking at this through blue-tinted specs.
“As a matter of fact, they’d be wrong. I’m sitting top of the Lowland League with Kelty Hearts right now and I don’t want to be awarded with a title that we didn’t win.
“Rangers fans might have a pop at me too because I know a lot of them want the season to be restarted no matter what. Or when. But I don’t care what people say. If they want to get worked up over something as trivial as this right now then I’ll leave them to it.”
Is Ferguson right about this?
Yes, without a doubt.
The only fair resolution to this problem is to conclude the season, whenever that may be.
Celtic may be 13 points ahead in the title race, but until that win is confirmed mathematically, they cannot be handed the title – it’s that simple.
Alex Rae recently pointed out a number of examples in recent years when late collapses have been crucial in deciding the title, and while another seems unlikely, we all know that anything can happen in football.
Who wins the title pales in significance compared to everything that is happening in the world today, but in the interests of integrity, this is the only fair solution.
