Celtic release official statement on Coronavirus stance amid Rangers title battle
Celtic have released a statement claiming that is their “strong preference” to finish the current Scottish Premiership season in full, despite being 13 points clear of Rangers at the top of the table.
All football in Scotland has been postponed in an effort to try and arrest the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, leading to some uncertainty over whether or not the campaign will be completed or not.
But while no official update has been provided from the relevant governing bodies, the Hoops have suggested via a club statement that they wish to play their remaining eight fixtures.
The Bhoys’ stance follows on from an official statement from Rangers made earlier this week that also made it clear that fulfilling the rest of the season was a priority.
An excerpt from Celtic’s statement reads: “With regard to the present domestic Premiership League situation, our strong preference is, of course, to complete all remaining matches.
“To date, we have had a magnificent campaign, undefeated in this calendar year, completing 30 league matches already to create a commanding lead and we are now on the cusp of winning our ninth successive title.
“As many have already said, the season cannot be voided as the consequences of that are so severe. In the event that the matches cannot be completed, then the responsibility to find a fair and reasonable solution for the finalisation of all domestic leagues will be with the Scottish football governing bodies.”
Is this the right move from Celtic?
Absolutely, yes.
We don’t always see eye to eye with our hooped neighbours, but in this instance it would appear that they are approaching the subject with logic and reason.
The season has to be completed, that much is abundantly clear, and it’s refreshing to see Celtic take that stance too, rather than trying to weasel their way to a ninth consecutive title.
There is that passing comment about finding a “fair and reasonable solution” to the season in the event that matches cannot be fulfilled, but even then, it doesn’t appear that the Hoops’ designs are particularly sinister.
