Ibrox View: McCoist absolutely right to hit back at Sutton after foolish Rangers title claim
RANGERS OPINION
Rangers, alongside the rest of the SPFL, are facing truly unprecedented times at the moment.
The Coronavirus pandemic has led to an entirely unexpected suspension in the league campaign, and there are still no clear signs as to how the rest of the season will be resolved.
With nine matches still to play in the Premiership, the Gers find themselves 13 points behind bitter rivals Celtic, but they still have a mathematical chance of preventing the Hoops from winning a ninth consecutive league title.
And that has led to widespread debate on what should be done if the remaining fixtures cannot be played.
And according to Chris Sutton, in that scenario, Celtic must be crowned champions.
Speaking on the Ladbrokes Debate, as per the Daily Record, he said: “We all hope that the season can be resumed but if it can’t then the fairest way is to make Celtic champions and Hearts are relegated.
“I can’t think of fairer outcome. Celtic have been the best team in the league. I’m not saying Hearts deserve to go down but they have been the worst team.
“If I was a Celtic player and Rangers were 13 points ahead and given the title I would accept that although I would be disappointed.
“But I understand there will be those who won’t accept that.”
Thankfully, however, Ally McCoist took a much more sensible view of the situation, replying: “You cannot possibly give a team a title when they haven’t won the title – and I include Liverpool in England in this.
“You can’t reward a team for something that hasn’t happened – ‘there you are, you’re the champions’ when you’re actually not the champions.”
And the former Ibrox boss makes a perfectly valid argument here.
Of course, Celtic are in a strong position, and it would be a shock if they didn’t wrap up the title at this stage.
But while there is still a chance that Rangers could get their hands on the trophy then it is absolutely vital that it isn’t just handed to the Bhoys on a silver platter.
To make such a decision would compromise the integrity of the Scottish game, and would justifiably cause widespread uproar.
It cannot happen.
