Report – Rangers set for major TV boost amid Coronavirus pandemic

The SPFL could allow more Rangers matches to be broadcast live in an effort to keep TV partners onside during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Daily Record

All football in Scotland has been postponed for the time being in an effort to help arrest the spread of the virus.

There are fears that the schedule may not resume until September, with no definite plan agreed upon to help find a resolution to the crisis.

But it is understood that the governing body could look into relaxing the rules surrounding TV rights in an effort to keep Sky Sports interested during the current barren spell.

That would include allowing more matches to be broadcast from Ibrox and Celtic’s Parkhead stadium too.

At the moment, regulations state that Sky can only show four Old Firm home games per season, but that clause could be relaxed in an effort to give the company greater financial flexibility and to keep legions of armchair fans happy.

Rangers

Would this be a good thing?

At the moment, it’s kind of difficult to pick out any real positives in the world of football.

In many respects, the game pales in significance compared to what is going on across the globe, but the reality is that at some point we are going to have to address the uncertainty that surrounds the league and how it should be resolved.

While relaxing TV rights wouldn’t necessarily help with that, it could prove to be a good way of keeping Sky interested in exporting the Scottish Premiership as a product.

That will be vital to the financial stability and health of clubs in the division, and from a fan’s perspective, having more matches available to watch from home is never a bad thing.

It’s not going to affect attendances, especially for the two Glasgow clubs, and it could be a small adjustment that makes a big difference further down the line.
