Ibrox View: Kris Commons makes unusually astute point in Rangers title race claim
RANGERS OPINION
Rangers, along with the rest of the Scottish Premiership, are facing unprecedentedly uncertain times at the moment.
With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic postponing all games for the foreseeable future, it’s hard to know how, when, or if this season will ever get resolved.
Obviously, there are a number of potential ideas being floated as possible solutions, from abandoning the campaign altogether to handing Celtic the title right now and calling it a day until next term.
But Kris Commons has made a very astute point about the possibility of the latter happening.
Speaking on talkSPORT, as per the Scottish Sun, he said: “It’s a strange scenario to be in but I don’t think anything ideal will come out of this.
“From a personal perspective I would like to think the season will not be null and void as if it never happened.
“Celtic, 30 games in and 13 points clear of Rangers should be champions, if that is the case.
“It almost feels as it if would be somewhat tainted in a way that they’ve not carried out the full fixture list.”
Of course, few Celtic fans would care whether or not their ninth consecutive title was “tainted”, but it’s hard to deny that it would always have a question mark hanging over it if it were just to be handed to them on a plate.
We may be 13 points behind them at the present moment, but Gerrard’s men have a game in hand, not mention the fact that we have to play Celtic twice between now and the end of the season.
Win all of those matches and suddenly the gap is just four points.
Bearing that in mind, how would it be fair to suggest that the race is done and dusted already?
The answer is that it’s not, and that finishing the season as it is must be avoided if at all possible.
