‘Definitely not’ – Dalglish issues verdict on how Rangers season should be resolved

Sir Kenny Dalglish has insisted that Rangers must be given a chance to catch Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Matches across the country have been postponed in an effort to help contain the spread of the virus, leading to uncertainty as to how the season will be resolved.

But Dalglish has suggested that too much has gone into the campaign for it to be abandoned now.

Writing in a column for the Sunday Post, he said: “Now, I’m a football man. I don’t have all the medical facts at my fingertips, and without trying to guess what might, or might not, happen in the next three or four weeks, my first thought is that we must be given time to finish the competitions in our own backyard.

“If that means we need to play every second night for three weeks during May, or even into June, then so be it.

“It’s far from ideal, I know, but every club would be in the same boat, so it would be a level playing field.

“What must definitely not happen is for the 2019-20 campaign to be declared null and void.”

Does Dalglish have a point here?

Absolutely, yes.

The sad reality is that at the moment we are all playing a guessing game.

Nobody knows how long this upheaval will last for, and we certainly don’t know when a normal schedule will resume.

Ultimately, however, this issue boils down to three options.

We can either cancel the season entirely, wiping it from the record books, or we can end things as they are and take the current standings as a final outcome, or we can endeavour to catch up on the time that will be missed at a later date.

That last one seems like the fairest option.

Is it ideal? Of course not, but during these testing times we all have to accept that come compromises have to be made.

If that means waiting a few months to finish the season, so be it.
