Ibrox Exclusive: Alex Bruce reacts to major transfer claim on Rangers ‘big asset’
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has claimed that he will be surprised if Rangers sell James Tavernier this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that Steven Gerrard is too much of a fan of his captain to offload him.
A recent report from Football Insider stated that the Gers had slashed their asking price for the defender in an effort to get him off the books at the end of the season.
But Bruce has revealed his scepticism at the claim.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It’s not often you hear captains getting spoken about in that light.
“Listen, I know Steven Gerrard likes him. He plays every week, the fact that he’s captain tells its own story.
“I think sometimes you can listen to reports, but sometimes you have to take no notice. I’ll be very surprised if Tavernier is top of the list in terms of trying to get people out – especially when he’s captain and done well there.
“I can think of other players that Steven will try and move on before Tavernier. But as I say, if they need to get money in and create funds, he [Gerrard] might look at it on the other foot and ask where he’s going to get money to strengthen in other areas.
“Obviously, he’s a big asset for them.”
Tavernier has been a virtual ever-present for Rangers this season, making 45 appearances in all competitions.
The 28-year-old has registered three goals and 14 assists over the course of those matches.
