‘Cart horse’ – These Rangers fans savage ’empty jersey’ v Bayer Leverkusen

Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to savage Alfredo Morelos for his performance in their 3-1 Europa League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday evening.

The Colombian drew another blank against the Bundesliga side, leaving him with just one goal since the winter break and stuck on 29 for the season.

Leverkusen took a 2-0 lead at Ibrox before being pegged back by a George Edmundson header in the second half.

A third goal late on now leaves Steven Gerrard’s men with a mountain to climb in the second leg, which is due to take place behind closed doors next week.

And supporters have seemingly lost patience with Morelos, who once again cut a frustrated figure on Thursday evening.

But perhaps there should be an element of sympathy for the 23-year-old too.

In no way, shape, or form has he been the player that we know he can be since January, but at the same time, he was working on scraps against Leverkusen.

The Gers were never set up to win that match, and that was always going to have a negative impact on the lone striker.

With just 35% possession, as per the BBC, chances were always going to be at a premium, and so it proved.

That’s not to say that Morelos is entirely absolved, of course.

He did miss a chance in the 54th minute that prompted Neil McCann into labelling him “terrible”, and ordinarily, you would expect him to bury that kind of opportunity.

But that’s the problem here – Morelos is blatantly lacking confidence.

Whereas a couple of months ago he would only need half a sniff to bury a chance, now he needs three or four a match.

If he could just get one, the floodgates would surely open.

Until then, it’s going to be frustrating to watch.
