‘Ridiculous’ – Darren Gough delivers reaction to Coronavirus update on Rangers v Celtic
Darren Gough has reacted furiously to the Scottish government’s decision to delay their events ban until after Rangers play Celtic on Sunday.
Nicola Sturgeon announced on Thursday that there will be a blanket ban on all gatherings of more than 500 people north of the border, effective Monday.
But the two Old Firm giants clash hours before at Ibrox in front of what is likely to be a sold out crowd of almost 45,000 fans.
And Gough has been left fuming by the lack of logic behind the decision to delay the ban until next week.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Why Monday?
“It’s almost, ‘well, we can’t do it this week because we’ve had Cheltenham [Festival], [this weekend we’ve got the Old Firm]’. It’s getting ridiculous.
“On Monday? What’s the difference between today, Thursday, and Monday?
“It’s four more days of people getting it, more people coming into contact with people who might have it.”
Does Gough have a point here?
Absolutely, yes.
If the decision has been made that a ban must be brought in, then what possible reason could there be for delaying it until Monday?
It is literally baffling.
Of course, nobody wants to see the Old Firm played behind closed doors, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that this is a worsening situation that is going to take stringent measures to arrest and hopefully resolve.
Allowing best part of 50,000 people to travel to a match, sit in close proximity with each other, and then leave together is frankly nonsensical.
If we’re being completely honest, Sunday’s game should be played behind closed doors, as sad as that would be.
