‘Huge’ – Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce backs Gerrard to make ‘difficult’ call ahead of Rangers v Bayer

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has claimed that he expects Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield to return to Steven Gerrard’s starting XI for the Europa League clash against Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday evening.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that the 31-year-old adds vital experience to the centre of the park for the Gers, as well as a much-needed creative streak.

Steven Gerrard confirmed during a press conference on Wednesday that the Canada international will be available for his side’s tie against Leverkusen, after having been out of action since coming off injured during the Scottish Cup defeat to Hearts at the end of February.

And Bruce believes that he must be reintroduced to the first team immediately.

Speaking to Ibrox News, when asked if Arfield should play, he said: “It’s a difficult one – as long as he’s not been out for too long.

“Obviously he brings something different for Rangers, brings a bit of experience, but of energy in the middle of the park, and he can create a goal and score a goal.

“Europa League is obviously huge for Rangers now because it doesn’t look as if they’re going to win the league, so Steven will be trying play his best team against a difficult Leverkusen side, so I’m sure that Scotty Arfield, if I was the manager, would be in the starting XI.”

Arfield had been in electric form for the Gers prior to his injury, registering six of his nine goals in all competitions since the end of the winter break.

The midfielder has been a virtual ever-present for Gerrard’s men this term, making 47 appearances across all tournaments.
