Trevor Sinclair claims Rangers will offload ‘lively’ Ibrox talent this summer
Trevor Sinclair has claimed that he will be surprised if Rangers do not sell Alfredo Morelos in the summer transfer window.
The 23-year-old drew another blank in the 1-0 defeat to Hamilton at Ibrox on Wednesday evening, meaning that he has still scored just one goal for Steven Gerrard’s men since returning from the winter break.
The Colombian was reinstated against Accies after being omitted from the Gers’ squad to face Hearts on Saturday following his failure to report back from a personal leave of absence on time.
But Sinclair does not believe that Morelos is offering enough on the field to justify his disruptive tendencies.
Speaking on talkSPORT (Thursday March 5th, 11.30am), he said:”I will be surprised if he [Gerrard] sticks with him [Morelos] because it will be a huge season in the league [next season]. They certainly wouldn’t want Celtic to get to that 10 [in-a-row].
“I played with a lively player in Paolo Di Canio, he would be a nightmare at times, but because on a Saturday he would win you the game, it was worth suffering – I don’t think Alfredo is doing enough in a positive way. Every time you read headlines about him, it’s not about him scoring hat-tricks. It’s about him being late, getting carded, saying this or doing that.
“I’d be surprised if Steven sticks with him just because I know what Stevie’s like as a professional. I know how much it means to him to have success at Rangers, and this next season being an absolute crucial season for Rangers.”
Will Ranger sell Morelos in the summer?
If they can prevent Morelos from leaving, you can bet your bottom dollar that Rangers will do so.
From an outside perspective, especially when he is in the kind of slump that he is right now, it can perhaps be a little bit difficult to understand why the Gers are so willing to continually put their faith in such a temperamental player.
Even this season, when we have seen a marked improvement in Morelos’ discipline, he has been sent off twice and booked a further eight times across all competitions.
But the fact of the matter is that replacing the South American would be a gargantuan task.
So far this term he has averaged 4.29 shots on goal per game, and has an expected goals rating of 0.62, as per Wyscout.
As a point of reference, Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, who himself is having a superb season at Parkhead, only averages 3.44 shots per game and has an xG of 0.57, as per Wyscout.
In short, for all of his flaws – and there are a few – Morelos is still the most dangerous striker in Scotland, and letting him go willingly would be lunacy.
