‘No-brainer’ – Pundit urges Rangers to snap up 24y/o danger man

Tam McManus has claimed that Rangers should have signed Livingston striker Lyndon Dykes in January.

The Gers slumped to another loss against Hamilton on Wednesday evening, leaving them 13 points behind Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

For their part, the Bhoys dropped points against Livingston in a 2-2 draw, with Tom Rogic scoring a stoppage time equaliser to ensure that Neil Lennon’s side extended their lead at the summit.

Despite failing to find the back of the net, Dykes put in an impressive performance against the Hoops, prompting McManus to urge the Gers to make a move.

Responding to a claim that signing him would be a “no-brainer”, McManus wrote on his personal Twitter account: “I said they should have signed him in January.

“Would have given them something totally different to what they have.

“Rangers struggle badly against teams who sit in and they can’t play through.

“He would have given them a target to go longer early and to attack crossballs.”

Should Rangers sign Dykes?

This mentality of “he played well against Celtic, he would be a good signing for Rangers” can sometimes be a risky one, but in this instance, you’d be inclined to argue that McManus has a point.

It’s undeniable now that the Gers struggle to break teams down when they set up to frustrate, and if that is the case then an alternative way of doing things is needed.

Last night at Ibrox, Steven Gerrard’s men had 31 shots on goal without any reward.

That’s bordering on ridiculous.

Now, don’t be mistaken, Dykes wouldn’t provide some kind of magical remedy to those frustrations, but at the very least he would prove something different.

So far this season, he has contested an average of 19.81 aerial duels per game, winning an average of 42.9%, as per Wyscout.

Factor in 3.17 successful dribbles and 1.88 shots on target, and it’s clear that Dykes is a busy, bustling physical presence who could do a real job for the Gers when their usual approach lets them down – as it continues to do.
