‘Kick up the backside’ – Jim White launches irate rant at Rangers squad after loss v Hamilton

TalkSPORT host Jim White has lashed out at Rangers following their shock defeat against Hamilton on Wednesday evening.

The Gers slumped to a 1-0 loss at the hands of the the struggling Scottish Premiership side, and now find themselves 13 points adrift of Celtic at the summit of the table.

And White was left incensed by the Light Blues’ inconsistency after they dropped points for a fifth time since returning from the winter break.

Speaking on his talkSPORT show on Thursday, as per the Daily Record, he said: “How can they go to Braga last week and win then lose to Hearts in the Scottish Cup then lose to Hamilton in the league?

“He [Gerrard] is saying this morning: ‘I’ve played the game for many years, I’ve been in dressing rooms where confidence is shot and things are not great. I’m not going to say this is the first time I’ve experienced that but the dressing room is very quiet at the moment.’

“So what are they doing? Are they all heads down and hiding these Rangers players? They need a kick up the backside surely.”

Is White right to be angry?

You can certainly understand where his frustration is coming from.

The disparity between where the Gers were at prior to the winter break and where they are at now is almost unbelievable, and not just in the very literal sense that they are now miles behind Celtic in the title race.

Steven Gerrard’s men look bereft of any confidence, and if you need any evidence of that, you need only look at the stats from yesterday evening.

The Gers had 69% possession and 31 shots on goal, but still couldn’t find a way through on their home turf against a side who are currently 11th in the table.

Compare that to the Scottish Cup match which the Gers won 4-1 at the beginning of February, steamrolling Hamilton despite having just 51% possession and 15 shots, and it’s abundantly clear that something is wrong.

The worry for Gerrard will be that his side appear to be toiling harder than ever before, but getting nowhere while doing so.

Whether it’s a lack of belief or something we are unaware of going on behind the scenes, the change is there for all to see, and it’s threatening to derail a campaign that was going so, so well – if it hasn’t already.
