Ibrox View: Out of favour Rangers first teamer surely blew major chance v Hamilton

RANGERS OPINION

At this stage, what can you say about Rangers’ current slump that hasn’t already been said?

Just when you think that Steven Gerrard’s men have hit rock bottom, they somehow find new and painful ways to underwhelm and disappoint.

On Wednesday night it was a shock defeat to Hamilton that took their run to whole new low – a result that was made worse by the fact that Celtic dropped two points against Livingston.

Instead of seizing on their opportunity and narrowing the gap at the top, however, the Gers choked, and now the title looks like a pipe dream at best.

But Wednesday’s performance could have even worse personal implications for one Light Blue.

In the absence of the injured Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara was drafted into the centre of midfield.

To all intents and purposes, this was an opportunity for the Finland international to prove that he was worthy of regaining a spot in the starting XI after having fallen out of favour at Ibrox in recent weeks.

Instead, he lasted just 59 minutes.

Now, admittedly, he was given the hook after Hamilton took the lead, and you could certainly argue that the introduction of Ryan Kent in his place was a knee-jerk reaction designed to counteract an unexpected opener by piling on the pressure at the other end.

But the reality is that if Kamara had been playing well enough, he wouldn’t have been taken off.

We’ve seen this before from him recently too.

Against SC Braga, his last outing for the Gers, he managed just 51% successful actions, and his pass completion rate was 14.9% lower than his season average, as per Wyscout.

With that in mind, and especially considering the fact that he hasn’t featured since, this was a very big opportunity for Kamara.

You can’t help feeling he blew it.
