Chris Sutton issues Twitter reaction after Morelos apology to Rangers fans

Chris Sutton has taken to Twitter to aim a jibe at Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos following his apology for receiving internal disciplinary action over the weekend.

The Colombian was omitted from Steven Gerrard’s squad for the Scottish Cup clash against Hearts on Saturday after reporting back to training 24 hours late following a personal leave of absence.

In turn, this led to an apology from the 23-year-old via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday in which he reiterated his desire to play for the Gers.

Sutton subsequently retweeted the apology alongside a caption that read: “Four days late…”.

Does Sutton have a point here?

No, of course not.

We’re not talking about four weeks or four months here, but four days.

To have a go at a player for something as trivial as this is, to be blunt, ridiculous.

If we factor in that the Gers played late on Saturday, that leaves us Sunday – during which it was probably wise for everybody associated with the club to keep their heads down given the shocking result – and Monday, when the Gers will no doubt have been conducting an internal inquest into what went wrong against Hearts.

Morelos then issued his apology on Tuesday evening.

That seems like a reasonable and forgivable amount of time for an apology, and to suggest anything else is essentially just looking for an excuse to chastise the South American.

If he’d said sorry too soon after the game you can bet that there would be pundits criticising him for some equally daft reason in that instance.

Morelos cannot win with some people, and we just have to hope that they don’t drive him out of Glasgow for good.
