Ibrox View: Reported interest in Rangers duo could hint at major issue on horizon

RANGERS OPINION

Things are looking relatively bleak for Rangers at the moment with regards to their hopes of winning the Scottish Premiership title this season.

Yes, they have pulled off a fantastic feat of endurance by making their way from the first qualifying round of the Europa League all the way down to the last 16, and you certainly wouldn’t bet against them going the distance in the Scottish Cup, but the biggest prize of all looks as if it could evade them once more.

Having gone into the winter break just two points behind Celtic with a game in hand over the Hoops, the Gers are now 12 points behind them and surely cannot afford to drop any more points if they are to prevent a ninth league title in a row heading to Parkhead.

But their problems might not end with another gloating victory parade for their butter rivals though.

According to Football Insider, Leeds United are keeping close tabs on Ibrox pair Ryan Kent and Connor Goldson, and could make a move for the duo in the summer if they get promoted.

And while that in itself would be a massive blow for the Gers, it is also indicative of a much broader issue that Steven Gerrard could be facing come the end of the season.

The problem is that Rangers currently occupy a kind of grey area.

They have talent in abundance, absolutely, but thus far, they have not been able to convert that talent into silverware.

In England Tottenham Hotspur have the same issue.

And much like we saw with Christian Eriksen’s departure from Spurs in January, the Gers could well be left stranded in a position where many of their best players are targeted for, and persuaded by, the possibility of a move away from the club.

The most pertinent example is obviously Alfredo Morelos.

With 0.65 goals per game this term, alongside an expected goals rating of 0.63, 5.01 successful dribbles, and a pass accuracy just shy of 80%, as per Wyscout, it’s fair to say that he has been as superb as ever.

And as such, it’s probably not too much of a surprise to see him linked with the likes of Tottenham and Inter Milan, as per Football Insider.

Now, trying to decipher whether or not he will actually leave Ibrox this summer is nothing short of supposition at this stage, but the fact that he, and the likes of Kent and Goldson besides, are already being spoken about with regards to potential exits must be a worry.

The fear will be, and justifiably so, that if the Gers can’t start winning trophies soon, they could be picked down to the bone in the coming months.
