‘For the record…’ – Chris Sutton hits back at Rangers fan on Twitter after win v Braga
Chris Sutton has hit back at a Rangers fan on Twitter following his claim that the Gers never “surrender”.
Steven Gerrard’s men put in an eye-catching display against SC Braga on Wednesday evening to book their place in the Europa League Round of 16 with a 1-0 win in Portugal, and even drew praise from Sutton himself on social media.
The former Celtic striker claimed that the Gers had executed their game plan to “perfection” after Ryan Kent’s counter-attacking winner ultimately decided the match.
But the pundit was back to his usual self shortly after with a much more barbed comment on the Light Blues.
When one supporter tweeted him claiming that his beloved side never surrender, Sutton replied in typically blunt fashion.
Writing on his personal account, he said: Good win, but for the record your team have surrendered to Hearts, Kilmarnock and St Johnstone in recent times…
“Good win though.”
Does Sutton have a point here?
As hard as it might be to admit, it’s difficult to argue with him on this one.
First and foremost, let’s make no mistake, the Gers’ performances over both legs against Braga were absolutely superb.
Yes, they started slowly at Ibrox last week, but the character they showed to come back and win that one 3-2 – followed by the masterful counter-attacking display they put on in Portugal yesterday – showed real strength and class.
That’s the positive side of what this Rangers side is capable of.
The more negative side is what we’ve seen in domestic competition since the winter break, and ultimately what Sutton is referring to here.
Nobody would have predicted a loss against Hearts this time two months ago, while nobody would have expected the Gers to throw away winning positions against Kilmarnock and St. Johnstone.
The title race is not over yet, even if it feels like it might be, but the sad reality is that since returning to action in January, the Gers have collapsed a little bit.
