Report – Rangers set to do battle with Celtic for seven-figure English ace

Rangers are set to go toe-to-toe with bitter rivals Celtic for the signature Gillingham defender Jack Tucker, according to The Scottish Sun.

The 20-year-old is understood to be a target for both Old Firm clubs, with the Hoops having scouted him since the beginning of the year.

Gers director Ross Wilson is also a keen admirer of the player, however, and has also had the youngster watched regularly in recent weeks.

The report claims that Tucker would cost either side around £1.5 million in the summer transfer window.

Steven Gerrard’s men could face further competition in the hunt to sign him, however, with Premier League sides West Ham and Aston Villa also credited with an interest, and Championship club Brentford already having had an offer of around £1 million rejected.

Would Tucker be a good signing?

The 20-year-old may lack experience, with just 35 appearances to his name for Gillingham, but he more than makes up for it in terms of his potential.

There is a reason why the League One player is attracting so much attention from higher in the footballing pyramid, and he really does boast an abundance of promise.

So far this season, he has won 7.61 defensive duels per game, as per Wyscout, as well as making 5.71 interceptions, winning 4.75 aerial duels, and recovering the ball 15 times.

Those are seriously impressive numbers, especially for such a young player, and if he can continue to progress at the rate that he is currently, then £1.5 million would look like a steal.
