Rangers defender Nikola Katic was probably very, very grateful to new teammate Florian Kamberi come the final whistle of the Gers’ trip to face St. Johnstone on Sunday afternoon.

The Croatian centre-back went a long way towards gift-wrapping the hosts’ opener in a 2-2 draw as he fluffed a clearance that allowed Callum Henry to race through and slide one under Allan McGregor.

It was, without any exaggeration, an absolute howler.

Rather than just calmly hoofing a relatively routine ball straight back where it had come from, the defender instead managed to put it straight up in the air, leading to boundless confusion.

Thankfully, Kamberi came to his rescue to some extent.

The 24-year-old not only brought his side level with a superb finish, but then backed it up with a fantastic assist to allow Joe Aribo to make it 2-1.

A late Stevie May goal dampened the celebrations, however, and ultimately meant that the Gers dropped two precious points.

More than anything else though, Katic looked like a disaster waiting to happen all game.

His mistake was one thing, but there were a number of other incidents when he looked downright shaky – hashing clearances, missing balls entirely, and generally looking off the pace.

The last thing Rangers need right now is a player in such a vital position underperforming so drastically, and unless something can be done to resurrect Katic’s form quickly, he will surely be dropped.
