Chris Sutton ‘sickened’ by senior Ibrox man after Rangers loss v Kilmarnock

Chris Sutton has claimed that he would be “sickened” by Steven Gerrard’s comments if he was a Rangers player following the shock defeat to Kilmarnock in midweek.

The Gers gave away a 1-0 lead at Rugby Park on Wednesday night as they dropped even further behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Following the loss, the manager came out and suggested that “mentality and character” of his squad were not as strong as he had believed prior to the game.

And Sutton has lashed out at the Ibrox boss for his comments.

Writing in a column for the Daily Record, he said: “It seems to be Gerrard’s way when it goes well, yet down to the players when it goes wrong.

“His comments after Rugby Park perplexed me. He said it was his responsibility. Then proceeded to cane his players for being weak mentally.

“It was like, “Yeah, blame me. But actually, it was really them”.

“That’s a dangerous approach. That can alienate players by making them feel the manager is protecting his own back at their expense. Those lads hadn’t lost an away game all season. It was a first. Did the players really deserve to be called out in that manner?

“If I’d have been in that dressing room, I’d have been sickened by it and the same thing happened after Rugby Park. I was there. I saw it unfold.”

Is Sutton in the right here?

First and foremost, when did Chris Sutton start caring about the feelings of the Rangers dressing room?

It feels as if the pundit makes a living out of lambasting the Gers, so for him to suddenly come over all considerate feels a little inorganic.

Of course, Gerrard didn’t handle the defeat with the greatest amount of poise, but it was a gutting way to drop further behind Celtic in the title race, and it’s probably fair to say that we were all feeling a little bit sore in the aftermath.

Who can blame the boss for being a little bit frustrated wit his players straight after the final whistle?

Lord knows the rest of us were.
