Report – Rangers hold contract extension talks with in-demand Ibrox favourite
Rangers have opened talks with star striker Alfredo Morelos over a potential contract extension, according to the Daily Record.
A report from the outlet suggests that the Gers have been in discussions with the Colombian’s representatives for several weeks in an attempt to agree terms on a fresh deal at Ibrox.
The 23-year-old signed a new four-year extension last March, but it is understood that the club are keen to get another agreement in place, and have tabled improved terms on Morelos’ current contract.
As yet, no deal has been agreed, and talks remain ongoing between the player and the club.
As reported by Football Insider last month, the South American was a target for both Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan, and it would appear that this move is a direct attempt to fend off any such potential advances in the future.
Would this be a smart move from Rangers?
It pretty much goes without saying, doesn’t it? Of course it would be a good piece of business from the Gers.
Morelos is the most dangerous striker in Scotland, despite Chris Sutton’s protestations, and losing him would be a hammer blow that could derail the Gers’ hopes of silverware for the foreseeable future.
Sure, he would fetch a pretty penny, but even with a wedge of cash sitting in their back pocket, who could the club realistically hope to replace Morelos with?
So far this term he has averaged a goal every 91 minutes for Steven Gerrard’s men, and his striker against Hamilton at the weekend was is 29th of the campaign.
Those are mind-boggling numbers, and if a new deal can be agreed, then the Gers should jump at the chance to get it over the line.
