‘Incredible’ – Billy Dodds raves about Rangers ace in loss v Kilmarnock

Billy Dodds has heaped praise on Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield for his long range strike in the 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock on Wednesday evening.

The midfielder opened the score at Rugby Park with an impressive effort from outside the area that swerved and wrong-footed Killie keeper Jan Koprivec.

But the goal wasn’t enough for the Bears, who were then undone as strikes from Stephen O’Donnell and Eamonn Brophy gave the hosts the win.

At the time of Arfield’s opener, however, Dodds saw fit to emphasise just how  good his goal was, comparing it to a similar effort the Canada international registered as part of a brace against Hamilton at the weekend.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the former Gers striker said: “It’s an incredible strike, it’s up there with his goal at the weekend.

“I just think the goalkeeper thinks it’s going to his right and he just lashes across it.

“I don’t even know if there was a touch, he just stands rooted as it sails past him into the top corner.”

How good was Arfield’s goal?

Obviously, it was a great strike.

The way in which it swerved in midair made the goalkeeper look downright foolish as he was rooted to his spot and the ball veered away from him at the last moment.

But really, if we’re being honest, as good as Arfield’s goal was, it matters for little this evening.

This is exactly the kind of result that Steven Gerrard’s men had to avoid, and they walked right into it.

That gap at the top of the table, just two points at the new year, is now a mammoth 10, and even with a game in hand, you have to wonder whether to not it is closable in the remaining weeks of the season.
