Chris Sutton shoots down Rangers fan with three-word Morelos verdict

Chris Sutton has shot down a Rangers fan for suggesting that Alfredo Morelos must be worth £80 million.

The former Celtic striker wrote a column for the Daily Record on Saturday that claimed that Hoops Odsonne Edouard could be worth anywhere up to £40 million in today’s transfer market.

He cited the struggling form of English Premier League talents Joelinton and Sebastien Haller as comparisons – with both players moving for in excess of £40 million over the summer.

Replying to his retweet of the article, one fan wrote: “If he [Edouard] is worth £40m then Morelos is worth £80m”.

Responding to that post, Sutton wrote: “Don’t be daft”.

Is Sutton right?

I mean, technically, he probably is.

Morelos is one hell of a player, but is he worth £80 million, really?

The point the fan is really make here isn’t about Morelos’ actual market value, but is more a comment on his worth relative to Edouard’s.

In that respect, you would have to say that he is more valuable than the Frenchman.

So far this season he has hit 28 goals in all competitions compared to Edouard’s 23, and has one goal every 91 minutes to the Celtic man’s strike rate of one every 129 minutes.

Obviously, these numbers only really tell us a finite amount about each player, but for Sutton to be so dismissive of Morelos’ talents seems a tad unfair.

The Hoops man clearly has a vested interest in supporting his former side, which is understandable to an extent, but when it inhibits his impartiality and logic as a pundit then you have to question how fair he’s really being.
