Celtic release new statement on controversial Sky interview with Rangers ace Morelos

Celtic have released another statement demanding greater clarification over Sky Sports’ apology for their interview with Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

The outlet released a piece over the weekend based on an exclusive conversation in which the reported that the striker had accused Celtic supporters of racially abusing him.

The Hoops then released a statement disputing Sky’s translation of Morelos’ comments, which were made in Spanish, leading to the interview being taken down and Sky issuing an apology to Celtic, Rangers, and the player himself.

Celtic have followed this up, however, by releasing another statement, this time demanding a greater level of detail over the matter.

It reads: “The statement issued by Sky Television is inadequate.

“It does not identify the source of the translation or why phrases, which bore no relationship to the words used by Mr Morelos, were introduced into it.

“In view of the substantial issues of public interest involved, Celtic have lodged a complaint with the broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, who can seek the necessary answers and adjudicate accordingly.”

Is this a fair thing for Celtic to do?

There are really two ways of looking at this.

Firstly, you could potentially argue that it would be best for all parties to just let this one go.

It was a dreadful error by Sky, yes, but it is probably just as damaging to Morelos as anybody else to keep on hammering home the issue that the initial Sky report on racist allegations was inaccurate.

Obviously, the player did nothing wrong, and that must be reiterated, but if they’re not careful, that fact could get lost in the overarching narrative and it could be used as a stick to beat Morelos with.

Given how unpopular his talents make him amongst opposition fans, that’s just about the last thing he needs.

On the other hand, however, if this is handled properly and with nuance, then you can understand why Celtic might want answers.

If they boot was on the other foot, we’d probably all be calling for Rangers to get to the bottom of the matter on how this misinformation was allowed to spread.

With that in mind, you can understand this follow-up statement, provided it doesn’t become a means by which Morelos can be castigated further by opposing fans.
