McAvennie tells reported Rangers target to spurn Ibrox move

Former Scotland international Frank McAvennie has told reported Rangers transfer target Lawrence Shankland to turn down a move to Ibrox.

It was reported in January that both Old Firm sides are interested in the Dundee United striker, as are Everton, Norwich City, Brentford and Queens Park Rangers.

McAvennie, though, feels that the 24-year-old should resist a switch to Glasgow in favour of a move to the Premier League.

“Rangers and Celtic want him but I’d tell him to go to England,” he told The Courier. “We’ve got guys like Andy Robertson, John Fleck, John McGinn and Ryan Fraser doing really well down south, Shankland is the next one.

“I can’t believe a top Championship club or a Premier League club near the bottom of the table didn’t come in for him in the transfer window.

“Rangers and Celtic want him but if he goes down south and it doesn’t work out, he can come back to one of the Old Firm.”

Where will Shankland end up?

This is a question that has been on the lips of those in Scotland for a little while now. Wherever he goes, they’ll be getting a natural goalscorer, that’s for sure.

However, you’ve got to think that it’s unlikely that anyone in the Premier League will come in for him until he does it in the Scottish Premiership.

He’s yet to score in that competition, yet he has 26 goals in 26 games in all comps for Dundee United this campaign. That’s form that will make anyone sit up and take notice, no matter that it’s the second tier.

Having said that, it’s just far more likely that he ends up in Glasgow than at a Premier League team, particularly if he leaves this summer.
