Report: Rangers 28-year-old set for return against Hibernian after recent setback

Rangers defender James Tavernier is set to return for the Light Blues against Hibernian on Wednesday evening, according to FourFourTwo.

The magazine claim on their website that the 28-year-old is set to feature against Hibs after being absent for the first two months of the year after undergoing appendix surgery.

Tavernier has been included in Steven Gerrard’s provisional squad for the game at Ibrox, with the home side looking to cut the gap to Celtic to only four points after their recent slip.

It will be a massive boost for the Light Blues – having their captain back available after a little crumble during his absence which saw his side lose their control on the title.

The 28-year-old has been phenomenal this season, and his ability to find the net and set up goals gives Gerrard two superb options alongside Borna Barisic.

Tavernier is also solid in defence, completing 2.2 tackles as well as 3.2 clearances per game according to WhoScored – a combined total that only Connor Goldson can better.

Matt Polster was given the nod against Aberdeen, and the American is nowhere near the standard of Tavernier.

Nathan Patterson also made his debut at right-back in the cup against Stranraer in January, and despite both of those options not doing much wrong, Gerrard will no doubt put his captain straight back into his defence.
