Report: Rangers failed twice with late loan swoop for Liverpool talent

Rangers were knocked back twice in their efforts to sign Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones on loan this January, according to Football Insider.

A report from the outlet suggests that Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard attempted to use his connections at his former club to broker a deal for the 19-year-old, but was ultimately unsuccessful in doing so.

It is understood that the Gers submitted to separate bids for the teenager – one at the beginning of the transfer window, and another in the latter stages of the window.

Jones was identified by the Gers as a player who could provide goals and creativity from midfield in their bid to dethrone Celtic in this season’s Scottish Premiership title race.

But it would appear that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also a big fan of the youngster, and has been seriously impressed with the progress he has made in recent months.

The midfielder came on from the bench in the Reds’ 2-0 Premier League win over West Ham last month.

Would Jones have been a good signing for the Gers?

There’s clearly a reason why Jurgen Klopp has opted to keep hold of the youngster, as opposed to sending him out on loan for the second half of the season.

The fact that Jones is making Premier League appearances for the European champions and the likely title winners is a real marker of just how much quality he possesses at such a young age, and had Steven Gerrard been able to snap him up, it would have been a massive coup.

Realistically, it was always going to be a tad optimistic to think that he could be lured away from Anfield, even on a permanent deal, but if anybody could have pulled it off, it would be Gerrard.

As it is, the deal was no-go, but it would have been superb business had it gotten over the line.
