Rangers boss Gerrard issues promising injury update on key Ibrox mainstay

Rangers captain James Tavernier should hopefully return to action in a couple of weeks, according to manager Steven Gerrard.

The skipper underwent a minor procedure on his appendix after taking ill shortly after the club’s warm weather training camp in Dubai, as per the Scottish Sun.

Initially, rumours circulated on the internet that the full-back could be out for  months with a burst appendix, although Gerrard did seek to quell those suggestions as soon as possible, as per the aforementioned Sun article.

Now, however, the boss has provided a more concrete update on his progress – and it’s good news for the Gers.

Speaking in a press conference on Tuesday, as quoted by the Scottish Sun, Gerrard said: “Tavernier is back in after his minor procedure, he is walking about and on the mend.

“We are hoping he will return in a couple of weeks.”

How big could this be for the Gers?

To be frank, massive.

The skipper isn’t just a big presence on the field, but he is a really important creative source down that right hand side too, and having him out of the side would have left a real void that would have been difficult to fill.

Of course, young Nathan Patterson impressed against Stranraer on Friday, and ex-Gers man Alan Hutton is tipping him for huge things this year, as per Football Insider, but he’s still just a teenager, and Tavernier is integral to this side.

With 12 assists and three goals already this season, as per Transfermarkt, he carries more of threat than pretty much any full-back in the country, and it is always the preferable option to have him in the side.
