Confirmed – Rangers talent puts pen to paper on fresh Ibrox deal

Rangers goalkeeper Andy Firth has put pen to paper on a contract extension with the club.

The Gers made the announcement via their official Twitter on Monday evening.

The 23-year-old has now agreed terms on a deal that will tie him to Ibrox until at least the summer of 2021.

Firth has just one senior appearance to his name for the Gers, making a seven minute cameo in the 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park towards the end of last season.

Despite that, he remains Steven Gerrard’s third choice option between the sticks this season, behind experienced duo Allan McGregor and Wes Foderingham.

Is this a good move from the Gers?

Honestly, it’s hard to tell.

Firth has been involved so rarely at senior level that it’s all but impossible to get a proper reading on where he is at in terms of quality and potential.

What you would say, however, is that Gerrard clearly sees something in him.

Having been in the Liverpool youth system at the same time that the boss was working there as a coach, you can assume that Gerrard has some kind of inside track on him – plus he gets to see him train every day now he’s at Ibrox with him.

Also, never underestimate the value of a good third choice keeper.

Finding a player who can be called upon in a crisis, but who is otherwise happy to spend every Saturday afternoon in the stands is something of a tightrope act. If you find a player who occupies that sweet spot mediocrity, sometimes it’s a good idea to hang on for dear life, even if he isn’t the most illustrious of names.

This feels like decent enough business.
