Kris Boyd urges rarely seen Rangers player to leave Ibrox for ‘great opportunity’

Kris Boyd has suggested that Greg Docherty moving to Sunderland would be a “great opportunity” for the Rangers midfielder.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Wearside this month, with Football Insider reporting that the Black Cats are set to open a new round of talks with the Gers over the possibility of taking him to teh Stadium of Light on loan for the rest of the season.

And Boyd believes that it would be a smart move.

Speaking to Sky Sports, as quoted by the Scottish Sun, the former Ibrox hitman said: “You are getting a hard working midfielder. He did well on loan last year as well.

“He’s not going to play at Rangers. Rangers with the squad they have got he’s not going to get in.

“I was a bit surprised when he made that move from Hamilton to Rangers in the first place.

“But he’s done himself no harm coming down on loan last year, doing well and getting that move to Sunderland would be a great opportunity because it is a massive football club.”

Is Boyd right?

At the moment, you would have to say yes.

When all is said and done, the chances of Docherty getting a better move than this during the current window are slim to non-existent.

Much has been made of his desire to move to a Championship club, as per Football Insider, but the simple fact of the matter is that he has not played enough to justify that kind of deal.

This way, he might not be getting his move to the second tier, but he’s getting the next best thing – a big club in a hot streak of form, challenging for promotion.

Docherty should jump at the opportunity.
