English boss confirms approach for senior Rangers ace, outlines potential issue

Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough has confirmed that his side have approached Rangers over the possibility of a loan move for Jamie Murphy this month.

The winger has been touted for a possible exit in the coming weeks, with Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard even alluding to the possibility himself, as per BBC Sport.

But speculation has been kicked up a notch by Clough’s admission that the Brewers are keen on the 30-year-old.

Rangers

As quoted by the Derby Telegraph, Clough said: “There has been an inquiry.

“We know his representative quite well, he looks after a couple of other lads at our place, so that’s how it’s come about.

“But he’s on quite a bit of money at Rangers, so I’m not sure whether there will be anything happening.

“You never know. It would be a difficult one.”

Is this deal likely to go ahead?

It’s difficult to say, really.

On a very basic level you would probably back Murphy to leave Ibrox this month, especially in light of Steven Gerrard’s comments alluding to a potential exit, and Burton are a side that continue to be mentioned time and time again, as per the Daily Record, for example.

But it doesn’t sound particularly great when Clough is talking about inflated wages and the like.

Is that a tactic aimed at kowtowing in negotiations, or is it a genuine concern about taking Murphy down to League One?

Only those in the boardroom will know for definite, but surely there must be a way to ensure that both clubs and the player himself get the best solution out of this situation – namely, a move that allows Murphy to go out and play regular first team football for the rest of the season.
